Rail franchise mobilisation - TransPennine Express
Peter acted as project manger in 2016 for the customer experience workstream for FirstGroup in the recent TransPennine Express mobilisation. This will transform TPE into an 'inter city' network for the north, and a large part of this is to create an 'intercity' customer experience all the way from ticket purchase to the cup of coffee on the train. Tight timescales were met to deliver hundreds of committed obligations as part of a team. The results can already be seen on the trains.
Rail franchise bidding
Abellio won the right to operate trains and station in Scotland from 2015. Peter worked on the project and helped to devise an innovative way of linking transport and land-use planning based on the Stedenbahn Plus model from The Netherlands. It integrates land-use and transport planning and encourages additional rail-based development. This tie-up is unique in Britain, and provides a template that could link train and land-use planning elsewhere in Britain, leading to more use of sustainable transport, lower emissions, reduced costs and better places to live. All this will make train services more viable and add to economic development
Peter led the environment and sustainability work stream in the Abellio bids for both the Thameslink Southern Great Northern and the Essex Thameside rail franchises. This included Environmental Policy and Management systems (ISO14001), Energy Management Systems (ISO50001), sustainable purchasing (BS8903), benchmarking, carbon reduction from trains, stations and infrastructure. The plans put the railway network at the heart of a sustainable community which included Station Travel Plans, Station Adoption and Community Rail Partnerships. It also included items not usually found in bids such as travel behaviour change programmes and innovative partnership working with local planning authorities to integrate land use and transport planning and ensure other modes such as cycle, walk and bus are fully used.
Substantial work was carried out in the following areas:
Environmental Policy and Management systems (ISO14001)
Energy Management Systems (ISO50001)
Sustainable purchasing (BS8903)
Carbon reduction from trains
Stations and infrastructure
